What is AWD?

AWD or "all-wheel drive" takes power from the engine and directs it to all four wheels through differentials. AWD systems come in two different types: part-time and full-time AWD systems. Full-time AWD systems constantly provide power to all four wheels at all times, while part-time AWD only provides power to the wheels when needed, and monitors the road to decide when it needs to be used. For vehicles equipped with part-time AWD, power is sent to the front axle when the system is deactivated. 

What is 4WD?

4WD or "four-wheel-drive" is the rugged 4x4 drivetrain that's perfect for off-roading. The main difference between AWD and 4WD is that a 4WD system is able to send specific amounts of power to each wheel, providing greater traction in tough terrain. When comparing AWD and 4WD, you'll see that 4WD has much better off-road capabilities, and is often included in trucks and rugged SUVs.

Which is Better: AWD or 4WD?
