The more you use your car and the longer your trips are, the more wear and tear your car experiences. It is vital to your vehicle's health and longevity that proper car maintenance is done. As a matter of fact there a few things you can do on a monthly basis that will cost pennies to nothing to perform. Keep reading to learn about things you can do to keep your car in great shape!
Check the Oil, Wiper Blades and Wiper Fluid
It only takes a few minutes and can be done while getting gas. Pop the hood and check if you need to top off the oil. Remember to get the oil changed every 3000 to 5000 miles.
Be sure to check the windshield wipers while you're checking the oil. Look for any cracks, rips or missing chunks. If they look good, you can wipe down the blades with a wet paper towel to remove any grime build up. After checking the windshield wipers, top off the wiper fluid.
Check the Power Steering Fluid
This is the fluid that people never seem to think about. If you notice your steering wheel feeling a little heavy to turn, just stop and check the power steering fluid. Most cars also make a noise if this fluid is low.
Without power steering fluid, the steering wheel will take everything you have to turn the wheel. You have to actually put your body weight behind it and that is not something you can do while driving down the road at a fast speed.
Check the Transmission Fluid
Low fluid can cause problems with shifting and can lead to transmission failure. It is important to always pay attention to how your car is shifting gears. If you feel it slipping check the transmission fluid.
Check the Brake Fluid
Brake fluid helps the brakes work. Brake fluid provides hydraulic power to the brakes, allowing them to squeeze with enough force to stop the vehicle.
Check the Tire Pressure
If you are not sure what pressure the tires should be at, look at the driver's side door jam. The psi should be listed there. Driving with the right tire pressure ensures that you are getting the best gas mileage. It also ensures that the tires are in the best state possible to avoid becoming damaged or blowing out.
Check the Tire Tread
You need your tires to be in good condition. It keeps them gripping the road. If the tread is wearing out the tires need to be replaced. Look for any bald spots or metal showing through. Look for any rocks or nails in the tires.
Check All the Bulbs
Make sure that the turn signals, the hazard lights and brake lights are working. Check your headlights for both the regular lights and the high beams. Besides a reason to get you pulled over, it is a safety issue. If someone behind you does not know you are stopping or turning, it can cause an accident.
Doing these few steps every month can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the long run. Make a habit out of it.
