The Top Safety Features to Look For When Choosing a Car for Your Teen

Your child has grown up and now they are ready for their first car. While they are most likely to be more concerned about how new the car is, or how sleek and shiny the car looks and what cool features it has, you as their parent are more concerned about how safe the car is. New or used, there is some basic safety equipment your teen's car should include, so whatever car you buy make sure it includes these critical safety features:

1. Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

Daytime Running Lights switch on automatically as soon as the car is turned on regardless of whether or not you use the switch. Cars with their lights on and shining bright are much more noticeable on the road, especially if it is raining.

2. Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

Electronic Stability Control helps reduce the risk of a rollover crash by keeping the vehicle in the driver's intended path - either by slowing down or speeding up, or a combination of both.

3. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock brakes help prevent the wheels from locking up during panic braking. This in turn allows the driver to keep better control of the vehicle.

4. Safety Belt Pretensioners

Safety Belt Pretensioners are designed to tighten the safety belt in order to prevent passengers from jerking forward in a crash. Note that older vehicles may not be equipped with these, but it varies by make and model.

5. Airbags

Airbags are safety devices that engage when a vehicle is involved in a collision. The bags work best in conjunction with seat belts and a proper seating position. When looking at cars, check to see how many airbags are installed and in which locations. The most important ones are the front and side curtain airbags.

6. All-wheel drive

While all-wheel drive can be an expensive option, it is ideal for drivers in cold-weather climates. All-wheel drive works to keep vehicles planted when the roads get icy or have snow by directing power to the front or rear wheels or, if applicable, both.
